Lavender

Lavandula angustifolia (“English Lavender” or "True Lavender") is a perennial evergreen plant native to the central and western regions of the northern Mediterranean. Wild plants are typically found in south-facing mountainous areas on poor, rocky soil where there are few faster-growing competitors. Lavender has numerous purple flowers that grow from terminal spikes (stalks) from the dense green-grey foliage below. The purple-grey calyx is tubular and covered in hair among which lie the shiny oil glands.

Spike Lavender

Lavandula latifolia ("Spike Lavender" or "Aspic Lavender") is a perennial plant found in the wild across the Western Mediterranean. Hybridisation with English (or True) lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) often occurs resulting in lavandula x intermedia (Lavandin). Spike lavender prefers to grow in lower regions than English lavender and has a much higher content of camphor.

Lavandin

Lavandula x intermedia (“Lavandin”, "Lavandula hybrida" or "French Lavender") is a perennial evergreen plant native to the central and western regions of the northern Mediterranean. Lavandin is a cross between Lavandula angustifolia ("English Lavender") and Lavandula latifolia ("Spike Lavender"). It is often called "French Lavender" because of its historical link with the French perfume industry. Lavandin differs from Lavender by its more pointed flower spikes and larger overall size. The long stalks of the Lavandin plant contribute to two-thirds of its overall height. Lavandin contains a far higher concentration (approximately 10 times) of camphor than Lavender which gives it a distinctive scent.

Rosemary

Rosemarinus officinalis (Rosemary) is a strongly aromatic perennial evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region. Rosemary forms low-arching branches which are populated with delicate purple-blue flowers. Chamomile contains finely dissected leaves and daisy-like flowers with yellow disk florets and white rays. The leaves are shaped like needles and produce the strongly aromatic essential oil. They are darker on the upper side while the lower side is covered in short white hairs.

Mint

The Mint family (Family: Lamiaceae, Genus: Mentha) are found in many environment across the world. The plants grow well in wet conditions with moist damp soils. Most mints spread quickly through the use of rhizomes.

Chamomile

Chamaemelum nobile ("Roman Chamomile") is a low-growing perennial plant native to the meadows of Europe, and North and South America. The leaves of the plant release a potent sweet-apple aroma on contact. Chamomile contains finely dissected leaves and daisy-like flowers with yellow disk florets and white rays. Each flowering head products thousands of tiny seeds which propagate easily.
