How to Visit Scottish Lavender by Public Transport
You can reach Scottish Lavender by bus via Kinross Bus Station or Milnathort. From either stop, you can walk or cycle to the lavender fields.
The most scenic route is from Kinross via the Loch Leven Heritage Trail, a flat, traffic-free path around the loch.
From Kinross Bus Station
Kinross Bus Station is located at Kinross Park & Ride. There are regular bus services to and from Edinburgh and Perth, with additional services to Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness on weekdays and Saturdays. Please check current timetables before travelling.
- Walking time: around 48 minutes
- Cycling time: around 15 minutes
The trail is mostly flat and surfaced with fine gravel. After heavy rain there may be puddles, so we recommend trainers or closed-toe shoes.
Suggested Route from Kinross
From Kinross Bus Station, walk down Montgomery Street and turn left onto the High Street.
Before joining the trail, you may like to stop for coffee at Unorthodox Roasters, or pick up soft drinks and snacks from Greens on the corner of the High Street and Station Road.
Continue down Kirkgate and into Kirkgate Park. From here, join the Loch Leven Heritage Trail.
On the way
If you are visiting Loch Leven Castle by boat, turn right towards the pier. Castle boat trips should be booked online in advance through Historic Environment Scotland.
To continue straight to the lavender fields, keep left on the trail. You will pass the Loch Leven Castle viewpoint, wildlife viewing screens, Queen Mary’s Gate and Burleigh Sands.
Loch Leven is an important wildlife habitat, and the views across the water are beautiful. Please note that algal blooms can occur in summer, so check Perth & Kinross Council guidance before entering the water or allowing dogs near the loch.
Arriving at the lavender fields
At Burleigh Sands, leave the trail and walk through the car park. The entrance to the lavender fields is a short walk along the road.
If walking, please walk against oncoming traffic so that vehicles can see you clearly. From Burleigh Sands car park, turn right and continue along the road to the field gate.
From Milnathort by Bus
If you arrive by bus in Milnathort, turn right onto Burleigh Road and walk past Burleigh Castle.
Turn right from the A911 onto the footpath that links to the old railway line. Turn left onto the old railway line, then right down the tree-lined path towards Burleigh Sands.
From Burleigh Sands, it is around a one-minute walk along the road to the entrance to the lavender fields.
- Walking time from Milnathort: around 30 minutes
- Cycling time from Milnathort: around 7 minutes
If walking from Milnathort, please cross the road and walk on the right-hand side, against oncoming traffic. This is also the side of the road where the lavender field gate is located.
After Your Visit
You can return to Kinross the same way, or continue exploring the Loch Leven area.
Loch Leven’s Larder
For food, head back onto the Loch Leven Heritage Trail and continue towards Loch Leven’s Larder, a farm shop and eatery with views over the loch and a play area for children.
Burleigh Castle and Milnathort
For more history, walk from Burleigh Sands towards Burleigh Castle, a red sandstone tower house dating back around 500 years. From there, you can continue into Milnathort for ice cream at Giacopazzi’s or cake at Heaven Scent.
Full Loch Leven Loop
You can also continue around the full Loch Leven Heritage Trail loop.
- Walking the full loop: around 4 to 4.5 hours
- Cycling the full loop: around 1 to 1.5 hours
